New Hampshire Folic Acid Program

The NH Department of Health and Human Services, Folic Acid Education Program provides education to women of childbearing age about folic acid and its role in the prevention of neural tube birth defects.

Program mission: To increase our state’s awareness of the importance for women to consume adequate amounts of Folic Acid in an effort to decrease neural tube birth defects (NTD’s) in New Hampshire.

Program goal: To increase the number of women of childbearing age who consume adequate amounts of folic acid in their diets and in multivitamins containing 400 micrograms of Folic Acid and decrease the number of NTD’s in our babies.

Ongoing Prevention Activities:

  • Folic Acid Educational In-services
  • NH Folic Acid Council
  • Multivitamin distribution to low-income women
  • Exhibits at health fairs & conferences
  • Distribution of free educational materials
  • Marriage license program for town halls

The NH Folic Acid Program provides free folic acid education materials and educational in-services to a variety of groups. Groups may include medical providers, public health educators, Nutritionists, and women of childbearing age.
